Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your role?
I’m Emmanuel Bain Oduwo, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Kemirix, a clinical medication safety platform focused on supporting safer and more rational use of medicines.
My background brings together pharmacy, medication safety, artificial intelligence and healthcare technology. At Kemirix, I lead the clinical product direction — identifying real medication-safety problems, translating them into product requirements, shaping how our medication knowledge and clinical safety systems work, and collaborating with our technical team to ensure the platform remains clinically grounded.
What motivates me most is the fact that medication safety is rarely about a drug in isolation. A medicine that is appropriate for one patient may be unsafe for another depending on factors such as allergies, kidney or liver function, laboratory results, age, pregnancy status, genetics, other medicines and the wider clinical context.
My role is therefore to help ensure that Kemirix uses technology responsibly to support doctors, pharmacists and nurses in making safer patient-specific medication decisions, while keeping healthcare professionals firmly in control.
How did your company come about and what was the motivation behind it?
Kemirix came about from a simple but important question: why are medication decisions still often made without bringing together all the patient information that can affect whether a medicine is safe?
As I became more involved in pharmacy, medication safety and healthcare technology, I kept coming back to the same problem. A prescription can look completely reasonable on its own, yet become unsafe when you consider the patient’s allergies, kidney or liver function, laboratory results, age, pregnancy status, genetics, current medicines or other clinical factors.
The challenge is that this information is often fragmented across different systems, documents and workflows, while doctors, pharmacists and nurses may be making decisions under significant time pressure.
That became the motivation behind Kemirix. We wanted to build something focused specifically on the rational and safe use of medicines: a platform that can bring together structured medication knowledge, clinical safety rules, evidence and AI-supported analysis around the patient’s actual clinical context.
From the beginning, the goal was not to create another general healthcare chatbot or a system that replaces clinicians. The goal was to help healthcare professionals identify medication-related risks earlier and make safer, more informed decisions before harm reaches the patient.
Can you describe your company’s mission and values?
Kemirix’s mission is to make medication use safer, more rational and more patient-specific by helping healthcare professionals bring the right clinical context into every medication decision.
We believe a medicine should never be assessed in isolation. Safety depends on the patient’s conditions, allergies, laboratory results, kidney and liver function, age, pregnancy status, genetics, other medicines and many other factors. Our goal is to help bring those pieces together in a way that supports better decisions across prescribing, verification, dispensing, administration, monitoring and follow-up.
Our values are built around patient safety, clinical responsibility, evidence and transparency. We do not believe AI should replace clinical judgement, and we do not want technology to create false confidence. Instead, Kemirix is designed to support doctors, pharmacists and nurses with clear, evidence-informed medication safety insights while keeping healthcare professionals firmly in control.
We also value accessibility. Advanced medication-safety support should not only be available in the best-resourced hospitals or health systems. Over time, we hope Kemirix can help make high-quality medication safety support more consistent across different healthcare settings and communities.
Above all, our principle is simple: technology should make medication decisions safer, not more complicated.
What are some of the most pressing social issues that your company is working to address through its technology?
One of the most pressing issues we are working to address is preventable medication-related harm. Medicines save lives, but they can also cause serious problems when important patient-specific factors are missed.
This becomes especially challenging in patients taking multiple medicines, people with kidney or liver impairment, older adults, children, pregnant patients, people with significant allergies, or those who need laboratory-guided dosing and monitoring.
Another issue is fragmented clinical information. A healthcare professional may need to consider diagnoses, allergies, laboratory results, vital signs, organ function, medication history and several reference sources before making one medication decision. In busy clinical environments, that creates a significant cognitive burden and increases the risk that something important is overlooked.
We are also concerned about inequality in access to advanced medication-safety support. Some hospitals have specialist clinical pharmacy teams and sophisticated digital systems, while others have far fewer resources. We believe technology can help make high-quality medication-safety support more consistent across different healthcare settings.
Kemirix is therefore focused on helping clinicians identify medication-related risks earlier, reduce avoidable harm and support safer, more evidence-informed use of medicines.
How does your company measure the impact of its work in creating positive change?
Because Kemirix is still progressing through product development and clinical validation, we are careful not to claim patient outcomes that we have not yet demonstrated.
At this stage, we measure impact by asking whether the system can reliably identify clinically meaningful medication-safety risks, whether the information presented is evidence-aligned and useful to healthcare professionals, and whether unnecessary or poorly targeted alerts are kept to a minimum.
As we move into structured validation and pilot settings, we plan to track measures such as detection accuracy, false-positive and false-negative rates, clinician agreement with identified risks, usefulness of explanations, time required for medication review, recognition of missing monitoring requirements, and the proportion of clinically relevant interventions accepted by healthcare professionals.
Longer term, we want to evaluate real-world outcomes such as medication-related risks identified before reaching the patient, improvements in monitoring, safer prescribing and verification workflows, and whether Kemirix helps reduce avoidable medication-related harm.
For us, positive impact is not about counting how many AI queries are generated. It is about whether the technology genuinely helps healthcare professionals make safer medication decisions and improves the quality of medication use.
In your opinion, what impact will technology have in creating a better future?
I believe technology will have its greatest positive impact when it helps people make better decisions, expands access to expertise and reduces avoidable harm without removing human responsibility.
In healthcare, professionals already work with enormous amounts of information. AI and other digital technologies can help organise that information, identify patterns that deserve attention, retrieve relevant evidence and reduce some of the cognitive burden involved in complex decisions.
Medication safety is a good example. A clinician may need to consider several medicines, laboratory results, organ function, allergies, diagnoses and monitoring requirements at the same time. Technology can help bring those relationships together more quickly, but the final decision still requires professional judgement and an understanding of the individual patient.
I also think the future will demand much greater accountability from technology. Accuracy, transparency, privacy, validation, auditability and clear limitations will become just as important as technical capability.
The best technology will not simply be the most advanced. It will be the technology that people can trust, understand and use responsibly to improve real lives.
What advice do you have for other companies looking to use technology for good and create a positive impact in the world?
My advice would be to start with the problem, not the technology.
It is very easy, especially with how quickly AI is developing, to become excited about a model or a new capability and then search for somewhere to apply it. For technology to create meaningful positive impact, I think the order should be reversed. Understand the people affected, understand the workflow, understand where harm, inequality or inefficiency actually occurs, and then decide what technology is appropriate.
Companies should also be comfortable being honest about what their technology cannot yet do. Trust is difficult to build and very easy to lose, particularly in areas such as healthcare where decisions can directly affect people’s lives.
Work closely with domain experts and end users, measure outcomes honestly, and treat safety, evidence, privacy and accountability as part of the product from the beginning rather than something to add later.
Finally, keep the mission visible as the company grows. Technology will change, markets will change and business models may evolve, but the reason you started should remain clear. If the technology genuinely solves an important problem and improves people’s lives, that purpose should guide the decisions you make along the way.
